On July 13, 2008, an estimated 200 to 300 Taliban fighters attacked an unfinished combat base at Wanat, Afghanistan. Even after reinforcements from 1st Platoon arrived, the fighting went on for hours. By the end, nine Americans had died and more than two dozen were wounded. Chosen Company (the nickname of C Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade) earned a Presidential Unit Citation and a Valorous Unit Award during its 14-month deployment, and Ryan Pitts received the Medal of Honor for his actions at Wanat. A World Undone: The Store of the Great War 1914 to 1918
By G.J. Meyer
WWI
Most people picture WWI as men stuck in trenches while generals threw away lives for nothing. G.J. Meyer's one-volume history pushes back on that image, claiming the Great War was never as static as its trenches suggest. He covers every front, and between the campaigns steps back to explain the dynasties, leaders, cities and weapons that drove the fighting. Along the way, he argues the slaughter could have been stopped at several points. A New York Times bestseller.

Kill Chain: The Rise of the High-Tech Assassins
By Andrew Cockburn
Modern Warfare/ Drone Warfare / U.S. Military
Journalist Andrew Cockburn traces the history of drone warfare back to long-buried secret programs dating to US interventions in Vietnam and Yugoslavia. He follows the chain of command from the White House to the drone command center in Nevada to the skies over Helmand Province. Drawing on sources inside the military and intelligence world, he examines the military, CIA, and corporate interests that pushed the Pentagon toward killing by remote control, and where the technology falls short of official claims.
